Moving...

Why does moving have to be so hard??? Stressful, so much to do, you don't want to forget anything-10,000 places you need to call and change your address with! You need to paint, fix things, replace things, move stuff in, rearrange the way you've had things-so they can fit into their new home-...empty box after box after box, then sit back and relax? No...in the old apartment, you need to fix up things you didn't get a chance to do before, or know that you won't get your security deposit back! If this were a planned move, it wouldn't be such a hassle. But it's not, so the blinds Jordan broke (mr. curious..) need to be replaced, the stains on the carpet need to be removed (god bless carpet machines!), yada yada yada. *sigh* When this is all done & over with, Andy & I need to go out on a luxurious date...maybe one that includes a massage? LoL. I'm so sore! & I've lost weight, which surprised me, seeing as I've been stuck at the same weight for a year now. =)
Needless to say, I'm off for now...need to catch up on laundry, pack some more, and hopefully do some finger painting w/ Jordan, and bake some cookies. I've been so busy, I'm making shamrock cut-outs AFTER St. Patty's Day!! LOL.

interesting twin phenomenon!

Taken from the New York Times....

Cândido Godói Journal
Mystery of the ‘Land of Twins’: Something in the Water? Mengele?

By ALEXEI BARRIONUEVO
Published: February 22, 2009
CÂNDIDO GODÓI, Brazil
The New York Times
Cândido Godói is a farm town.
Like so many in this farming town, populated almost entirely by German-speaking immigrants, Mr. Grimm, 19, believes that something in the water — a mysterious mineral, perhaps — is responsible for the town’s unusual concentration of twins.
“It can’t all be explained by genetics,” said Mr. Grimm, himself a twin.
Geneticists would like to disagree with him, but even they have no solid explanation for the 38 pairs of twins among about 80 families living in a one-and-a-half-square-mile area.
The mystery has persisted for decades, attracting international attention and inspiring books and investigations by geneticists. It is one reason locals are in no hurry to try to prove their water theory. They are too busy posing for journalists and marketing their town to tourists as the “twins capital of the world.”
Some researchers have suggested the darker possibility that Josef Mengele, the Nazi physician known as the Angel of Death, was involved. Mengele, residents say, roamed this region of southern Brazil, posing as a veterinarian, in the 1960s, about the time the twins explosion began. In a book published last year, an Argentine journalist, Jorge Camarasa, suggested that Mengele conducted experiments with women here that resulted in the higher rate of twins, many of them with blond hair and light-colored eyes. The experiments, locals said, may have involved new types of drugs and preparations, or even the artificial insemination Mengele claimed to know about, regarding cows and humans.
But neither Mr. Camarasa nor any other adherent of the Mengele theory has been able to prove the escaped Nazi conducted any experiments here. Mengele, who died in Brazil in 1979, was notorious for his often deadly experiments on twins at Auschwitz, ostensibly in an effort to produce a master Aryan race for Hitler.
“People who are speculating about Mengele are doing so to sell books,” said Paulo Sauthier, a historian who runs a museum here. “He studied the twins phenomenon in Germany, not here.”
A sign at the entrance to Cândido Godói says, “Garden City and Land of Twins.” More than 80 percent of its 6,700 residents are of German descent. They began arriving around World War I, lured by the prospect of cheap land, an agreeable farming climate and incentives from the Brazilian government to colonize the area.
The twins phenomenon is centered in the 300-person settlement of São Pedro, the part of Cândido Godói where the Grimms live. Mr. Sauthier, a twin, was born here in 1964. His mother, a Grimm, comes from one of the eight original families to settle São Pedro in 1918.
Even today they live a relatively isolated existence. Oxen still drag farm machinery. Residents speak a German dialect to one another.
It was in the early 1990s that the high proportion of twins was widely noticed. Soon, camera crews were rolling in from all over. Town leaders declared São Pedro to have the highest concentration of twins in the world. (A spokesman for Guinness World Records could not confirm that claim, saying Guinness did not keep track of the category.)
Today, residents relish the attention. Last year, at São Pedro’s sixth biennial twins party, they erected a statue of a woman holding a boy in one arm and his twin sister in the other, and installed a moat-like “fertility spring” that lights up at night.
Like many twins here, Fabiane and Tatiane Grimm, 22, have been posing for twins-seekers since they were babies. When a journalist and a photographer showed up unannounced, their mother ushered them from a barn into the house to shower before posing for pictures.
“It’s not too much of a mystery to me,” said Fabiane, whose family has five pairs of twins. “My brother married his third cousin. There are lots of cases like that, people marrying their cousins or other close family members.”
But to some, the mystery remains. A decade ago, Anencir Flores da Silva, a town doctor and former mayor of Cândido Godói, set out to solve it, and he has since interviewed more than 100 people. He said he believed that people were holding back information about Mengele.
“In a region full of Nazis, there are some that remain silent, who are scared,” Dr. da Silva said. “It is important that we discover the truth.”
A book he helped write about the twins, published in 2007, tells of several visits Mengele made to the region, using false names.
“I am convinced that Mengele was in the region and was observing the twins phenomenon,” Dr. da Silva said. He said a man identifying himself as Rudolf Weiss attended women with varicose veins and sometimes performed dental work. And some residents told him a German man was driving from home to home in a mobile laboratory, collecting samples and ministering to women.
Mr. Sauthier, the historian, said that the assertions lacked proof and that the German community did not deserve to be associated with “a criminal like Mengele.”
“There are no Nazi sympathizers in this region,” he said, although he acknowledged a historical interest in Nazi artifacts, including a 1937 metal milk can with a swastika in his museum and a 1936 photo of schoolchildren in Cândido Godói holding swastika flags that was included in Dr. da Silva’s book.
Geneticists say the most likely explanation for the twins is genetic isolation and inbreeding. Ursula Matte, a geneticist in Porto Alegre, found that from 1990 to 1994, 10 percent of the births in São Pedro were twins, compared with 1.8 percent for the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
There was no evidence of the use of contraceptives or fertility drugs among the women, nor of any genetic mixing with people of African origin, who have higher twinning rates than caucasians, Dr. Matte said. But the rate of identical twins here, at 47 percent of all twin births, is far higher than the 30 percent that is expected in the general population, she found.
While identical twins are generally thought to occur randomly in the population, independent of genetic factors, the remarkable discrepancy in the frequency of identical twins has led Dr. Matte to conclude that Sao Pedro is an "isolated phenomenon" where unknown genetic factors must be at work.
So the speculation continues.
Mr. Sauthier said he believed private water sources like the one Derli Grimm enjoys contain a mineral that affects ovulation. “To this day, no one has tested that water,” he said, noting that in the past decade the town switched to underground well water, a possible explanation for a recent decline in twin births.
Testing the spring sources would be expensive and, Dr. Matte said, would require some hypothesis about what the research was looking for. She doubts the town will ever push seriously to do a study. “They like to maintain the mystery,” she said.

pizza pizza!

Haha, we had pizza today.

I haven't blogged in a bit, due to my son having a phase where he played chipmunk with my laptop's power cord. Mid-tax filing, the power cord decided to die, and the computer lost all it's power. We're currently borrowing a friend's laptop. Income tax $ = new laptop! =)

I was all excited this morning about blogging, although of course now I can't remember what I had wanted to talk about! KMart is doubling coupons up to and including $2.00 this week, which is awesome. =)

Also found a coupon for a free $5.00 Tim Hortons gift card when you test drive a vehicle...it was in the auto section of the sunday paper, of course.

Andy picked up a pantry from Target Saturday, and we spent a decent block of time putting that together, clearing out the back hall, and reorganizing! =) Sadly, our kitchen didn't come with much cupboard space. 4 cupboards above the sink, 4 below (dishes, cleaning supplies..), and then 2 on top of a counter, and 2 below (food..)--when we first moved in, we went to Salvation Army around the corner, and found a pantry-type thing with doors on the bottom, and we have pots & pans & the microwave on that in the kitchen. So, for the past 2 years, we've had a mini-fridge in our back hall, with piles of kitchen stuff around it--and our counter space, and high-up space has all been cluttered! I'm THRILLED to now be able to see my precious (& rare!) counter space. Of course, losing Jordan's bottle rack (well, packing it away) helped that a ton. I wish I could buy a nice big house (it could be small, I really just want a ton of land..) with a HUGE kitchen with tons of cupboard space! Haha.

Andy's 'Ultimate Grilled Cheese'

Yeah.

Grated Pepper Jack Cheese

Tabasco Spicy Pepperoni

Cubes of Ham (leftovers from new year's day)

He said it was spicy. LoL, I bet.

I have to admit, it looked pretty tasty...my tummy just didn't want any food. =(

Bright Ideas!

I grabbed a brown paper bag, and began to neatly place some of my massive pile of paper in my hallway into it. One item being a HUGE gift bag that I had my son's too-big-to-be-worn clothes in the basement in. (I brought that & 2 garbage bags up this past week & went thru them, as he's growing rather quickly...) The gift bag was ratty tatty, falling apart & bent in a billion different places, leaving thousands of creases. I noticed the handle was still there on the one side (the shoelace like material that can be reused in many of my crafts)-so I tore it off. Then, as I stood there struggling to fold the danged thing, I realized there were a lot of sections that were crease-free. My first thought was 'scrapbook pieces'! Then, 'noo...gift tags!!!!!!'...Needless to say, the gift bag was much easier to put into the brown paper bag about 20 minutes later. =)
In the bag are also 2 cut-up x.mas cards from this year, and 4 gift tags from a tissue box! Yes...my tissue box looked festive to me. =)

& More Deals..

As most of you know, the Garnier hair products were on sale @ Walgreens this week-$2.99 each (which, if you ask me, isn't a sale.) w/ a $2.00 off coupon in their easy saver catalog-coupled w/ your $1 manufacture coupon =.01 overage. I took advantage of that when I stopped in search of ibuprofen..my stock needed replenishing after I took my lovely spill & then woke up w/ an enormously obnoxious cold. Turns out their ibuprofen was on sale B1G1 (the walgreens brand)-and they have a $1 coupon in their easy saver...the coupon rang up twice (both did, actually, even though I only handed him 1, but I bought 2 of each product)-so it was $1.33 for the 2--my total w/ taxes was $2.54. Not bad at all. =) I used a g.card to pay for it, so I paid nothing. I went to another Walgreens further down the street (in search of an easy saver catalog, progresso soup & hunt's tomato sauce)--i got the soup (in-ad coupon 4/$5.00, sunday paper coupon $1.00 off 4)-and sauce, and needed tylenol for my teething & sick son--I had a coupon for $2.50 off of 2--so I was prepared to dish out some cash (well, a good portion of my gift card, LOL)-but instead, I found Children's Tylenols with peelies on them for $1.50 off-so I just bought the 1. I might go back next week & get more if they're still there. =)

Let's see....what else...oh! SuperBowl is coming up--I had to stop @ Wegmans tonight on my way home from work to pick up a 12pk of toilet paper while they were still on sale (not to mention before we ran out, especially considering we're out of tissues, and I've already went thru 1 roll of t.p. with my nose!) for $4.99 (I know, I could have bought brand name t.p. w/ coupons for cheaper, but I didn't feel like it.)- and I went thru the beer section & grabbed a form for the $5.00 mail in rebate for Labbatt--which, for the record, comes in pretty quick-we sent in for the $4.00 one when it was around a few months ago--and grabbed a 'party guide' from coorss which has a few rebate offers inside.

Deals......

I recently sent in for a $10 Shutterfly gift card using a mail-in form & my receipts from purchasing 3 packages of LUVS from Save-A-Lot (not a biggie, as we use Luvs...)--and had to create an account to redeem my g.card. I then received 25 free prints. Today, I got an email for 15 free prints. I have 3 email accounts, and on my OTHER email account, I received an email for a free calendar. I guess after I made my account, I signed off, then when I wanted to redeem my g.card (I haven't used it all up yet.) I made an account w/ my other email-I get confused frequently by my emails. I need to actually get each account specified for one specific thing! But anyways-those are great deals. The calendar one expires on Monday, so hopefully tomorrow I will have time to create & order it. If not, no biggie...we have calendars here. =)

More photo deals:
--http://www.clarkcolor.com/registration 40 free prints @ sign up

--www.shutterfly.com 25 free prints--they also have a new Share Site where you upload your photos to share w/ people, and you get 30 free prints just for doing that, and then you can receive 10 free prints for each week you upload photos to the site until 2/13/09. I've received a few emails on that-I've been uploading to the regular albums, but once I'm done with that, I'll be uploading onto the Share Site & I'll let you know how that goes!

--Kodak Gallery, 75 free prints-exp. 1/31/09 (after that, they will still have free prints, as they always do, just not as many.)

--CVS -50 free prints (something like 30 @ sign up, and 20 for uploading photos)

--www.snapfish.com 50 free prints, and they ALWAYS have a TON of deals. I received a $10 gift certificate for there for x.mas, so I'm excited to use that. Along w/ all of my other deals, I will be able to FINALLY catch up on all my photos, and continue my son's scrapbook!!! I'm a 'click a holic' as my cousin calls me, so you can only imagine how much $ I'd be paying to photo sites if it weren't for all these offers. The greatest part is that they don't restrict it to per household, only per email! I've made accounts with 2 of my 3 emails, as well as Andy's email-all paying w/ the same credit card, and it's all worked out great!

snow & ice..

Oh yeah, so we had that snowstorm...then it melted ! (it was like 40-60 out & super sunny), then it snowed AGAIN!

So right now, there's snow outside, of course...& it rained the other day, which quickly turned into ice. Yesterday morning, Andy said 'it's icy out, honey'-so I put on my boots...Jordan & I were driving Andy into work so that I could have the van to take Jordan into the dr's, and to go to the WIC office & get a new i.d. (i lost mine during one of the storms)--I went down the porch steps, and took one step on the long concrete landing that is right before 2-3 steps leading to the sidewalk-and BAM! Next thing I knew, my feet were in the air above my head, followed by an explosion of hot pain & darkness...followed by me screaming @ the top of my lungs 'OW! ANDY! MY HEAD! OW!!!' and then balling my eyes out...for an hour & 1/2. I had Andy call my doctor (I swear I thought I was dying!) and they said to come in @ 9a.m. when they opened-it was just before 7 at that point. We went in-I got a concussion (fun, fun), and I had her check Jordan's ears while we were there-and he doesn't have an ear infection again (he just got over a double one..yuck!) thank god. Hopefully his ear flicking just has to do w/ his teeth-and his ear wax the dr. said is in there, LoL.
Needless to say, I also sent Andy out for rock salt yesterday. =)

Thrift shops...

I have to admit, I *love* thrift shops, consignment shops & yard sales...as well as craigslist & ebay! Why pay full price for something I can pay 1/2 price for, especially if it's for my son who will only outgrow it or get bored with it all too quickly.
Naturally, then, the disturbing news of this ridiculous new law that will require lead testing on all products (clothing & toys) for children under age 12, is upsetting. So many secondhand stores will be closing. Unless we get more hand-me-downs from friends/family, we will be forced to purchase everything brand new for my son. Unless we magically fall upon more $, we will struggle greatly purchasing everything new.
Here & here
is an article on the law, & I'm sure if you google it (swagbucks! haha) you can find many many more.
Also, here is the link to Brian Higgins, my congressman-please email him &/or your own congressman & other officials in an attempt to stop this law from happening (due to go into effect on feb. 10th 2009!)
